Funny enough, I created my world of Evenshade because I had just started playing Dungeons & Dragons with some friends and our Dungeon Master asked us to write backstory for our characters. :D It has been a real joy to create more and more in that location over the past year, and our campaign even took us into Evenshade from time to time because there's a bit to draw from.
I get the sense that the campaign we're playing will come to a close near enough, and we'll start a new one sometime in the next few months. If that's the case, and I wind up creating a new character in a new locale, I might just have to create a brand new world!
I'm grateful to the folks who created, run, and continually improve World Anvil to have this wonderful platform for creative writing, and I appreciate you all for the excellent ideas you bring to life on it! I finished my first pass of Summer Camp articles to read a week or so ago, but I keep going back to read more--I'm likely going to add more onto my reading list, because each evening I find more that grab my attention and keep me captivated.

Brand New World? During SC2026?
I know we're not supposed to start a new world during the middle of Summer Camp, but I couldn't help myself this time around. In years passed, I forced myself to tuck away new worlds until AFTER Summer Camp was over and then I'd be bored of them and not want to work on them. So they sit there, collecting dust. This year, I changed that.
Enter the Ashfall Saga, a fantasy world were the arcana is everything everyone needs. The world is centered around a new novelization series I'm planning to write once Summer Camp ends, and the prompts are working wonderful with expanding the world, and the novel. Five articles are automatically interconnected, which excites me more.
As I tried to weave this year's prompts with my other worlds, I was struggling. The Ashfall Saga has been a blessing in disguise and I'm starting to catch up. I just got to 16 prompts because of the Ashfall Saga, and I'm hoping to extending that to 24 by week's end, leaving with the final 8 prompts for the last week of camp.

This is my first Summer Camp. Next month, just before my birthday, I will have been on WA for a year. I am having a blast with these prompts.
The chase between the Smirnov twins on their M-9 Kestrels vs. Adi on her Ozymandias 6000 was one of my favorite scenes to write. It's a shame that the Smirnov's bikes were destroyed in the chase.

One of my fav characters I made in my book. He's a real menace, that is at best argued as a loose canon being an Orc Slayer, his hatred for the Horde knows no bound!
That said, his dialogue is fun to write, a mixture of cockiness, vulgarness and poetic flair, along with a northerner's accent to lace his voice.
He is brutal for all the right reasons but dangerously power-hungry. He's practically warped by his need for vengence, always on his one-man campaigns against the orcs for what they did to him in his past.
Of course now, he is called upon for a greater purpose than just endlessly slaying orcs in my book.

Developing and editing the second book of my saga is going smoothly, I believe.
The bloat is mostly gone, a few chapter rewrites have definitely enhanced the quality, and I’ve been adding smaller scenes to further enrich the characters beyond simply knowing them as a cool elf assassin, a rogue vigilante with a badass mask, or the rest of the companionship by surface alone.
Anyway, this means more lore will be coming to my world here on World Anvil, although I still have some empty articles I’ve yet to complete due to limited time. One of those is the Immortal Lords - essentially god-like entities who rule entire planets of their own out in the cosmos of my fantasy setting. Their direct influence on Kyfeia is small, which is why they often rely on their cults and followers.
With that said, I should soon write another character article on an important figure who will be featured in either Book 3 or Book 4 when the time comes:
The Makerbound Sovereign of Veros.
She is the 5th “Chosen Queen” ruling Veros, the land of the Wild Elves. Rulership in that realm is not traditional. It is not inherited by blood, nor seized by force.
It is gifted to someone deemed worthy of the title by the Makers.

Hey everyone! Take a look at the first article I'm posting for the Worldbuilding Summer Camp this year!
In a harsh, arid savanna in Kerine, communities have realized that they cannot sustain themselves as their population grows. As a result, they formed an order of warriors made up of the elder, more battle-hardened warriors of their settlements named The Bones of Isaar, named for their sacrifice and the one who formed the order. They essentially swear off resources that might eventually go to the people of their home, and wander the savanna protecting their people until they eventually perish from the harsh conditions.
Its my take on the prompt "A faction that employs questionable methods for the love of their people." Its a bit of fantasy dystopia with some Nights Watch vibes from GoT too. Take a look if you have a chance!

I’ve just released Issue 12 of the Raven & Quill, alongside the perspective shift moving between the isolating fog of Chapter 14 and the upcoming visceral nightmare of Chapter 15.
This week’s entry explores the unseen war at the drafting table: The Outline vs. The Draft. As a planner, I design deeply interconnected matrices looking out generations. But when you sit down to put meat on the bones, characters stop being compliant chess pieces. Forcing them to satisfy a contrived plot-post violates their internal logic. Two days ago, a major binary state in the timeline changed, and the plan had to be thrown out.
The wildest part of this structural shift is what I call Accidental Armor. The emotional hardening forged for Talathis in Chapter 14 was meant to prepare him for a plot trajectory that has now been completely deleted from the future timeline. Yet, the armor still holds the exact structural weight of the new reality.
In our next issue, we step out of the stillness and into Chapter 15, "The Flesh in Winter." We will plunge into the sickening reality of an autonomy hijacked, exploring the parasitic mechanics of a cage made not from metal, but from flesh.

How do you write characters who are useful, but dangerous?
I’ve been thinking about one of my own characters lately: Jake, a Heartlander battlemage whose command of destructive magic makes him invaluable in war, and deeply unsettling to fight beside.
He is not the heart of the group, nor its conscience. He is the edge.
The kind of companion who can break a stalemate, save lives, and terrify enemies… while also dragging the people around him closer to choices they may never forgive themselves for.
I find these characters interesting because they are not villains, but they are not exactly pure heroes either. Their usefulness becomes part of the danger. The group needs them, but trusting them fully may be impossible.
Do you have characters like this in your worlds, of allies whose power, methods, or temperament make them both necessary and frightening?

How do you balance writing your story with updating World Anvil?
I love using World Anvil as a home for my setting, it helps not to store everything in documents, but lately I’ve struggled to divide my energy between writing, editing, promotion, and building out lore articles.
Most of my focus right now is on the next volume of my epic fantasy saga, especially edits, rewrites, and new scenes. I haven’t posted a proper new World Anvil article in quite a while, some of them are empty for the time being.
That bothers me a little, because I want the world to feel alive outside the books too. I want the histories, cultures, characters, races, and major events to have a place readers can explore.
At the same time, the books themselves have to come first.
For those who both write stories and use World Anvil, how do you keep the balance without feeling like one side is being neglected?

I think it is crucially important to breathe history into a fictional world, not just as distant background, but as something that still shapes the present.
In my book saga, one of the most defining historical events is The Scarlet Carnage, or what I sometimes call the Orc Apocalypse.
It was not merely an invasion. It was a continent-wide catastrophe that reshaped politics, military doctrine, racial hatred, and the way entire civilizations prepared for war afterward.
Centuries later, its wounds still bleed into the current age of my saga: why orcs and the “Uglies” are so widely feared, why the armies of Iolas have become harsher and more prepared, and why the people of the world remember how close they came to being consumed by something as profane n primitive as the Scarlet Horde.
For me, history matters most when it refuses to stay buried. Does your world have an event like this, something from the past that still shapes the present?

Published chapter 11 finally. I managed to get the first draft done and got some time to edit it. Originally, I wasn't sure I was going to work on my manuscripts, but then I realized that the Hitchhiker's Guide is limited to 2,000 words which is too easy for me. My original draft stands at 12,000+ words.
Last month what little writing time I get was consumed by Adventure April which took longer than I expected. This month most of my writing time has been consumed by the Hitchhiker's Guide to Chendiuria.

I must start by apologizing that for the foreseeable future, I am not getting to work on my manuscripts as other writing has consumed what little writing time I get.
Last month it was Adventure April; this month it is the Hitchhiker's Guide to Augmented Valor that is consuming all my writing time.
I just started writing the guide and haven't edited it yet, so expect some mistakes and misspellings. If you look over what I have written so far, I would love some suggestions and/or creative criticism.
Creating a Hitchhiker’s Guide for the Augmented Valor universe requires a specific blend of bureaucratic dry wit, cosmic cynicism, and a healthy dose of "Don't Panic" (even when faced with Screamer-Vant Neuro-Gas).
The break from writing my manuscripts has been helpful. I am taking the time to gather my very scattered notes from all of my paper binders, notebooks, stenographer's pads, etc. into Milanote.
My return to my manuscripts is uncertain, and I suspect few will miss them.

One of my favourite articles, Keystones, is in the running for Best Article of 2026! This is the biggest category I've ever been up for, and my first time in the big leagues. In 2023, we won Best Body of Work in Worldember 2023. Could this be the year where Solaris snags a spot in the sky alongside the heroes of World Anvil?
For those of you new to Solaris , it's a space opera set in our little solar system, inspired by mythology and the wonder of looking up at the stars. It's been a sparkly crystal paradise, up until the angelic armies of the sun attacked and laid Mercury to waste.
I write Solaris alongside my cowriter and fiancée Skye. All the art for Solaris is drawn by me in MS Paint, and I made my own theme. No AI or LLMs are involved in any step of the process. I can do all of this because of the wealth of knowledge shared here on the internet, so I try to do my part in sharing what I know as well. You can find a bunch of guides by me in the Post Script of Solaris, as well as links to resources I use, and I've been trying to update all my articles with a authors note about my inspirations.
This year I also got my second nomination for Strength & Honor with Operation War Dove, the article that gave me my first ever win on World Anvil when it was picked as the winning conflict article that Summer Camp. The overview of the tech of my setting, Crystal Technology, was also nominated for Pillars of Progress. Both of these categories are voted on by you, and I highly recommend you check out all the articles and vote on your favourite!

Hello everyone
First, I want to say Congratulations to all the #WAWA Nominees for their works being chosen for the voting phase! Sadly, I didn't get nominated this time around so I'm a little bit disappointed. Still, I was good that I took the plunge this year. On the flip side, I can FINALLY edit those articles I've been eager to tweak for weeks now.
With SummerCamp 2026 coming up soon, I'll have prep time before things get rolling. I've got some interesting ideas that I'm toying with. Let's just say that I want to add some "character" in my world (hint, hint)

How often do we let magic be "hand-wavy," or gloss over the logistical nightmare of how different cultures actually measure time?
In Raven & Quill Issue 6, I dive deep into the mechanics of Aithyris to address both of these issues, and I wanted to share some of that forge-labor with this community.
The Clocks of the Five Seas
If you've ever looked at the historical mess of the Julian and Gregorian calendars and thought, "I should do that to my characters," you'll understand "The Lag".
The ancient Shandaryn calendar of my setting uses a perfect 351-day solar year. But humanity couldn't leave the math alone. The trade-focused Therysians anchored their New Year to the Spring Equinox , while the traditional Vesprians anchored theirs to the Winter Solstice. The result? A predictable annual overlap where one nation is technically a full year behind the other for three months and a week. You can read the full mechanical breakdown in Calendars & Timekeeping.
The Somatic Economy & Thermodynamic Magic
I also touch on the physics of the "Shadow". Instead of treating darkness as just "bad lighting," I built it as an active endothermic vacuum. Because the medium of the Shadow is acoustically dead , moving a living soul through it creates intense "Friction of Identity". Magic isn't free; it's a zero-sum thermodynamic exchange.
The issue also features a personal journal entry about a recent lecture I attended, a fumbled question about entropy, and why the physical "connectedness" of the universe matters so much to the themes of my story.

Okay friends… I’ve finally finished my full deep-dive into one of the great kingdoms of Rhycullun, and yes, it absolutely ran away from me in the best way possible.
We’re talking Del Yerlusta - the ancient elven realm of living terraces, moon-pearl spires, unicorn omens, and the Seven sacred Elardail who literally grow from the leylines themselves. It is lush. It is dramatic. It is quietly judging everyone else from inside a very well-maintained forest.
It’s over 5,500 words (Sorry, not sorry), so this isn't a “quick scroll while you wait for the kettle to boil” situation. This is a cup of tea, cosy blanket, maybe cancel your evening plans kind of read. I regret nothing.
If you’re into kingdoms that choose patience over rash decisions, long-term stewardship over flashy domination, and connecting with the land and wildlife instead of conquering it… this one’s for you. Hello everyone,
Now that the #WorldEmber Awards Ceremony has passed, I can finally update my articles. And I do have some updates to make, along with some planned changes I intend to do. What are some of those changes?
The first being that I am working on a new background & world banner for my world of Arktoria to give it more of an original visual identity. I'll keep the current color scheme for now as I'm still tinkering with that in my mind. Once I finish making that changes, i"ll post a community update to inform my followers and the wider community.
The second is my plans to add more images to my articles overtime, although it will be in phases as I complete the artwork. I've already started doing with the relatively recent update I made to the Rogue profession which you can view below:
I will continue to do so with more and more images as I finish them.
That is all the current updates I have at the moment. I will be submitting entries for the 6th #WorldBuildingAwards contest as well. Updates on those entries will come later. Until them, have a great day!

Woo, 2026 New Year's Resolutions have been made! Not too much worldbuilding done this past month because I was reading a lot of your guys’ stuff. But I did add some navboxes and category pages to my /dev/null world, so hopefully that will make it easier to navigate. I also added navboxes to my Root Directory challenge hub world.
I do not know what I’ll be submitting to the Worldbuilding Awards, if anything, but I’ll probably have a think and polish up some things this month.

New Art Post Tomorrow, Waiting on WorldEmber Judging, and More Snow!

Sometime tomorrow I'll post more #artwork that I drew for all WA to see, which I'm all too happy to do. I'll review the original art I'll be posting sometime tonight.
I'm also dealing with the final preparations before it snows here again in NC due to the second upcoming Winter Storm. All this snow and ice coming here yet its not even Feburary yet. If I get anymore snow in NC again, I'm gonna start looking for a throne (wink, wink).
As for recent articles I created for my world of Arktoria, I'm waiting on the #WorldEmber judging process to finish before I touch them again. Although I badly, BADLY, want to give them further edits! Why must I wait so long????

My Stubuary 2026 Mega-Entry
Then I wrote a child article for all nine of Scarterra's priesthoods on THEIR strategies for dealing with kings and queens. For Stubuary 2026, I gave ALL TEN articles in this series a thorough polishing.
Lots of proofreading, lots of pictures, adding POV quotes, more dynamic formatting and even a dash of coding to make the visuals scroll a bit better. Everything I could think of to make it worthy of being a major tentpole of Scarterra's lore.

WHERE HAVE I BEEN?
Hello everyone,
I'm sure that you noticed a lack of updates from me here (apart from me being semi-active on the WA discord) recently after the conclusion of #WorldEmber2025 There are a few reasons for this.
The first reason being that I've simply been in recovery after #WorldEmber. I have been using most of January to restore my creative juices after being in literal overdrive last month, reaching above 10,000 words. Plus the editing and final checks for every entry before #WorldEmber concluded demanded much of my attention. At this point, I'm starting to get back into the normal flow of my creativity so I'll likely start posting more often soon.
The second reason is more recent as my home state of North Carolina was one of the states hit by a major winter storm named Winter Storm Fern. The last two days have seen parts of NC getting varying amounts of snow and ice. I kinda had to prepare for that. Ironically, this also turned out to be a blessing in disguise as I needed a nice background for my entry into the Beautiful People contest. As of this post, there is still much snow and ice at my home but it is melting (albeit slower than expected).
The third reason is connected to the first one: I wanted to avoid burning myself out so I backed up from creating anything for a time. As many of you know, burnout can really hinder the creative process and I made it a point of stopping so I wouldn't be running on fumes creatively. New ideas are forming in my mind again so I feel that I have managed to avoid major burnout.
Those are the main reasons for me not posting anything major here. I also have not forgotten about posting more of my artwork here. That will be occurring again soon.

I confess: the map nerd in me took over. I realized the current satellite imagery for Vespria wasn't enough to satisfy the vision. So, instead of just writing, I spent the week rebuilding the Vesprian realms from the ground up in Photoshop to prepare for a massive InDesign overhaul.

AAAHHH it’s 2026 now! I’m not ready! I hope your WorldEmber went well, mine did. The other WA events didn’t go too well for me this past year, but this WorldEmber went much better. I didn’t get through as many articles as I would have liked, BUT most of the articles I wrote were over 1k words, so the quality of them has improved :) I think my backlog list of articles to create actually INCREASED this past month instead of getting smaller, haha! I have too many ideas.
I have another world, but didn’t manage to get around to adding anything to it; I had too many ideas for the dragonguard world. I added 4 new dragonkin species! I didn’t get to 100 world followers by the end of the year, but I am less than 10 away, so that’s still pretty cool!

Since I had quite a distance to cover, I ended up writing a rather large piece.

This event is by far my favorite. While my pledge was for 25k, I managed to reach the top of the 50k mountain - and then some! There’s still a little time left before the event ends as I’m writing this, and my goal is to have one entry for every template. I have seven left and seven days to go. What do you think? Can I do it?
We’ll see…
I’m a little sad we didn’t get more leaderboard updates this year. I don’t know the reason behind it, but for me it made the event lose some momentum. The leaderboard isn’t about the stats; it’s about the community. It sparks conversations, makes it easier to discover articles, creators, and worlds (and let’s be honest, discovery on the site is not its strongest feature). I hope this was just temporary and that next year we’ll return to the hype that the frequent updates used to bring.
