Chapter 6

64 2 1

Captain Codwell sat at his desk as he planned their next steps of attack. The strictly needed plants to produce the chemical compound had now been ambushed and effectively sabotaged thanks to his crew. Plans of protections were no longer efficient, for the public invested more on therapy than weaponry due to thinking the monsters were a result of madness. Their government was not going to give the wrong impression.

He slid a small figurine across the map in front of him and rubbed his forehead, "That would only work if we had more supplies..." Too much to figure out and not enough time. He still needs to arrange the meeting with his highest ranking agents, the Flight Agents.

Flight Agent Tex stood at his door in anticipation. A report, just what he needed.

"Agent Tex, perfect timing. Mission status?"

"Well, Captain. For starters, all the plants were killed. We also killed freaks not associated in the region."

"Explain. If you have information, now is the time." The captain quipped.

"Rock Worms, Captain." The air got heavy.

Codwell gave the man a strict glare, "This is no time for games, agent."

Agent Tex scratched the back of his head, "I wish I was. We have reports of three being exterminated during our last mission. Many sightings claimed, but now I have confirmed witnesses."

"I would ask who, but we are pressed on time. Which region were you in?"

"Farmlands couple miles off from Munich, sir."

Codwell paused and pondered on what this meant, "So, they're migrating north?"

"I suspect that, especially considering they originated from Africa."

They held strong eye contact, "I want all of them demolished before they go beyond Europe. We do not have the measures to deal with the cold of Santa's workshop. We're not elves, we're a resistance."

"Aye-aye. I can escort a legion of our greatest fighters and we will take care of them quick like."

Tex marched out, leaving the leader alone again with his thoughts.

A voice echoed around him, "You know you can't stop me."

Captain jerked his head around and drew his gun and held it firmly, "What do you want, Doctor?"

"...You already know..." Giggles filled the room.

"Leave. Now."

From directly behind him the voice continued, "Never."

Captain whipped around and shot three indents in the wall before he realized that nothing was there. Then he sat back into his chair and stared down, haunted by the possibilities. It was only a matter of time.

It was the next morning and Colbert and Lorisa met up in the food court. They took some of their good to Colbert's favorite spot where they watched the sunrise. Lorisa had finally adjusting to the simple speech, however, she could not speak it for the life of her. Many of the buildings in their view had been destroyed.

"What ever happened to all these buildings? Some of these must have been majestic!" Lorisa asked while observing the view.

"Beautiful, isn't it?" The young man said as he ate a bagel, referring to the sky, "Many were destroyed from lucid residue. Monsters formed out of dreams. I always expected them to be much creepier, but thankfully some things are just enough to be bearable." He glanced at he, "I do actually have some news to share with you, if you don't mind."

"That's quite interesting- Of course, I'm always a willing ear."

"I...will be going away for some time. For a mission and they are not allowing partners to come unless they're specifically assigned." He hung his head low as he felt her disappointment, "I'll come back before the week ends, I promise."

"Oh...forgive me, of course I'll be just fine. I have already put my trust in you long ago." This forced a bittersweet grin on his face when she spoke.

"I actually need to start getting ready as soon as possible. I'm not allowed to give the details. High five before I leave?"

"Why would a high be a five?"

"...Nevermind."

She gave him a gentle hug before he left and sent him off with the rest of his bagel. Quirky as always. He looked back after opening the door on the way out and gazed at her for a moment, then left after shaking his head.

Colbert made his way to his room and began to get his equipment together. Now he always brought his harness after what happened with the Rock Worm. The quiet began to sink into his soul because he knew he was not alone.

"You know who you are...don't you...?" A voice echoed from behind.

"I don't know what you're talking about." He ignored it and fastened his belt.

"Colbert Nauge....You know exactly who you are..."

"Colbert Nauge, that is correct. Thank you for observing the labels across the room and my stuff. Now excuse yourself. I have a job to do."

"Yes...You do..." The room was filled with mad laughter and gushing wind that disappeared from the center of the room.

He knew he was running out of time.

Wow, this chapter had me completely on edge from start to finish! I love the way you build tension with both the monsters and the shadowy threats Colbert and Captain Codwell feel so vivid, and the mix of strategy, danger, and eerie mystery keeps me hooked. The dialogue crackles with urgency, and the hints of unseen forces lurking in the background send chills down my spine. I’m dying to know what’s really haunting Colbert, and how far will these unseen threats push him in the next chapter?

My goodness, I'm in shock! This is the first time anyone has commented on my work and I appreciate it while heartily. I technically have up to chapter 10 planned out to some degree, though most of the development has been completely improvised. Thank you so much for your support and I hope you enjoy the next chapter as it continues. I cannot answer any questions that may spoil the plot, of course. Now, may I ask, do these characters feel realistic? Does their dialogue feel personalized?

I am updating the dialogue to match military lingo more accurately to go with the nature of the resistance and give a professional air to Captain. If you like it, please let me know! I really care about pacing and effectiveness.

Yes, they feel very realistic to me. Each character has a clear voice, and the dialogue feels natural and purposeful. The Captain especially comes across as professional and capable, so refining the military lingo sounds like a solid enhancement rather than a fix. Pacing felt strong overall I stayed engaged the whole way through. I’m really looking forward to the next chapter.

Also I have some thoughts about your writing. Can we connect on Discord or Insta?

Oh, the joy this brings me! While I do not have any social media platform, I still would deeply love to hear (or read rather) your thoughts or ideas. So I may promote you to a Flight Agent if you wish

Flight Agent is the tag for my subscribers group. Because I will making the world private, so then you can still see it. I am doing this in order to prevent intellectual property theft.

Oh, that’s incredibly kind of you thank you so much for the offer, it really means a lot to me. I’m honestly honored you’d even consider that.   At the moment, though, I try to keep my online involvement fairly limited and avoid joining subscriber groups or private spaces, just as a personal boundary. That said, I’d still absolutely love to share thoughts or feedback as I read along.   Email might be the easiest way for me to stay in touch and exchange ideas without needing to join a group.
