schrodinger's prison
i cannot escape because
i do not want to

the most valued gift
i have ever been given
is new perspective

liminal spaces
hide within the deep shadows
longing to be found

we found each other
starstuff beyond memory
behind the darkness

monsters in the light
glittery and sparkling
as they take your eyes

the phantom heartbeat
resounding inside my breast
skips in time with you

steam. whistle blowing.
all aboard! run from your life.
get it back on track.

red splatters eggshell
dripping crimson streaks of rain
his blood stains my wall

spin the wheel and drop
lucky numbers whirling round
russians do not play

the deck is shuffled
all the cards are well hidden
waiting to be found

the two jokers live
within the beating heart
death is violent

faceless voices cry
sanguine tears fall in fire
ashes stain their tongues

two black kings outside
in silence waiting for news
wild magic unleashed

somewhere beyond home
in the memories long gone
we linger in love

lonely the station
among the yellow salt flats
dead horses run south

shadow wings like skin
the caress of a lover
longing for your death

Your haikus create such vivid and haunting imagery each one feels like a small window into a deeper emotional landscape. I’m curious, when you write these, do the images and themes come from specific experiences, or do they emerge more spontaneously as you write?

Thank you for your kind and beautiful words! These are written from the perspective of Ruth Anne Quinn, the owner of the Black Box Casino. I've been studying haiku as a form since I was in second or third grade. (I took a summer school class about haiku and origami.) I find them useful for getting into the head of a character, forcing myself to see THEIR world poetically. It exposes what they value and where they see beauty and where they still hurt and what they're afraid of.
