Aetherium

What is Aetherium?

Aetherium is a rare arcane crystal that stabilizes, regulates, and stores magical energy. Unlike most magical materials, it does not amplify magic by force. Instead, it imposes structure upon the Weave itself, preventing magical collapse while allowing greater, controlled output.

Because of this property, Aetherium is indispensable in mythallars, advanced enchantments, and post-Netherese arcane infrastructure.

Scholars widely regard Aetherium as the metaphysical antithesis of Karsite.

Aetherium Shards

Raw fragments of Aetherium can be used as temporary magical regulators.

• During a short rest, a creature may focus on a shard of Aetherium to recover one expended spell slot of 3rd level or lower.
• This benefit may be gained once per day per medium creature's palm sized shard.

Netherese wizards of the past knew how to form this crystalline element into Mythallar's capable of restoring sustaining higher level spell slots, but this knowledge has been lost to the ages.

Aetherium (Weapon or Focus Modifier)

Weapon (any) or Spellcasting Focus, rare
Requires attunement by a spellcaster

Weapons and focuses infused with Aetherium act as arcane regulators, smoothing spell output and preventing destructive fluctuations.

Arcane Regulation.
While attuned, your spell save DC and spell attack bonus each increase by +1.

Arcane Bleed.
Once per turn when you cast a spell of 1st level or higher, you may deal additional force damage equal to your proficiency bonus to one target of the spell.
This damage represents excess magical usually energy normally wasted in the casting being funneled back into the target.

Stored Casting.
When you finish a long rest, choose one 1st-level spell you know or have prepared. You may cast that spell once without expending a spell slot. This ability resets after a long rest.

Containment Failure.
When you roll a natural 1 on a spell attack roll, the Aetherium momentarily fails to regulate the Weave. Roll on a Wild Magic Surge table.
This effect occurs regardless of class and represents magical feedback, not innate chaos.

Aetherium (Armor or Clothing Modifier)

Armor (any) or Robes, rare
Requires attunement by a spellcaster

Armor or robes threaded with Aetherium are designed to stabilize the spellcaster themselves, reinforcing concentration and dampening hostile magic.

Arcane Regulation.
While attuned, your spell save DC and spell attack bonus each increase by +1.

Weave-Stabilized Focus.
You have advantage on saving throws made to maintain concentration.
• If you already have advantage from another source, instead gain a +2 bonus to concentration saving throws.
• This bonus does not stack with itself.

Spell Dampening.
Once per long rest, when you are hit by a spell that targets only you, you may use your reaction to either:
Halve the spell’s damage, or
Negate the spell, as if casting Counterspell at 3rd level.

This effect represents the Aetherium absorbing and dispersing hostile magical energy.
